Introduction

I've seen a lot of articles about the recent conflict in Israel and Palestine, before that, the conflict in Georgia, before that, Tibet... DeviantART is full of people with ideas and opinions.

But beyond the politics of right and wrong, everyone involved in any conflict has one thing in common. Humanity.

I can't comment on world affairs or resolve them, so for you on DeviantART this is what I can offer you - a reminder of our blessings.

The small things that make all the difference without us even knowing... (in no particular order)

Conclusion and a Challenge

So, to close off this article I want to ask you, the reader, to tell me what brings you peace. What clears a troubled day from your mind, who makes you feel good, does a bubble bath help, or do you have to be tranquilised to stop yourself from worrying if you left the toaster on?

Focus on the peace that you can hold onto, as we pray for a peaceful resolution to conflict.

The comment that makes me smile the most (and no I wont accept any that mention me, you little cheats) will win a 3 month subscription.

That's all, be peaceful and be kind to each other.

Those features were beautiful Kate, I've fav'd a couple of them too...

+++

What brings me peace is knowing that I am loved. My family and friends, knowing how much we all fight with each other, I know that we all love one another unconditionally, and with that fact, I can start to understand why they do what they do... they're only trying to do what they think is the best for me.

Meditation, silence, waking up to watch the sun rise, looking into the eyes of my puppy - all these things and more bring me a calm peace.

But most of all, music, my life force. Without music, life would not be worth living. Without music, all that there is of me would an empty husk, a shell, devoid of all emotion. Not living, but merely existing...

That is what brings Peace to me.

In a general sense, I am most at peace knowing that my family and loved ones are safe, healthy and happy  But, I also feel very peaceful when I can cocoon myself away from the world all snuggled up in my favorite blanket, indulging in my favorite forbidden snacks while watching "Pride and Prejudice", or "The Lake House", or "You've Got Mail", or "Something's Gotta Give", or…well, you get the picture :giggle:

I find peace in little mundane details. A drop of sweat down my brown, water messing my hair, being able to write. I find peace in my own troubled emotions, cause they comfort me, letting me know that somehow I'm still human, and I can live with that.

I find peace in solitude, when I manage to swallow my pride, my prejudice, and simply pray, and fall asleep while doing so.

Awww. Thanks for the feature. I'm glad I was able to help give you that "peace of my mind". lol

I get peace from lots of sources. I like reading for gaining peace introspectively, and writing when I want to share my thoughts with others. Sometimes I'll just take a long walk with my camera and snap pictures.

Ironically, when I get angry with someone my methods for getting peace are kinda destructive. When I get angry at someone, I load a FPS (first-person shooter) video game and imagine that the person is my opponent. I have a big rant at the screen while kicking someone's digital butt... and I feel better after the game is over.

Knowing I am loved, and loving brings me peace.

It seems rather cliche, but I honestly can't think of anything else that will make me always feel better regardless of the circumstances.

Love is when you feel like a complete person; it's when the other person makes you feel completely happy and at peace no matter what they say.

It's when you are willing to make sacrifices just for them without a second thought. It's when you're able to face down your fears just for them.

It's when you feel amazing about yourself because of the way the other person sees you... you can't help but see yourself in the same way.

I've always loved the Chinese word for love - it's ai 爱- and the bottom half of the character means friend. =]

Platonic love, romantic love, family love... all of them are wonderful, wonderful things, and I am lucky enough to be surrounded with them every day.

Thank you for this. It made my evening.

Peace for me is being awake in those small hours of the morning when most everyone is alseep. It's quiet and empty and I can fill it with whatever I like. I can dye my scrambled eggs pink and dance around the kitchen in my sister's prom dress from the 80's. I can spin around in circles until I get too dizzy to stand, and then lay down on the floor and feel the world spin around me. I can color with crayons and not have people judge me because I like to draw stick-figure horses and little snails crawling up the edge of the page. I can mix up my own little cocktails full of orange juice and berry juice and soda and vodka, and pretend it's a remedy for my aching to visit the seaside. I can do cartwheels on the grass outside, and I can roll down the hill again and again because there's nobody there to stop me, to tell me what to do, nowhere I have to go, no obligations, no expectations, nothing but me, myself, and I.

Beautiful article...brought me to tears a bit.

Well, I don't have a lot to say here. The simple truth to my happiness and what brings peace to me is the security and knowledge that my loved ones are safe from harm, secure in the knowledge they are loved, that they have a roof over their heads, food on their table, love in their hearts and the desire to help others in need.

When I know that, I can sleep in peace.

Snow, silence. Like when you walk outside in the middle of the night, and it's completely silent, it feels like everything, for that one moment, is in perfect harmony. A blanket of snow covers the ground, and the tiny flakes brush against your skin. I can almost imagine each tiny snowflake as a kiss from someone who loves me. Someone I haven't found yet, but who's out there, waiting for the right moment to find me. It sounds kind of silly, I know. But that's my peace.

my current job is in a call center for mail order prescriptions and prescription benefits management. any time i take a break, i need to read to bring my stress levels down. if i didn't read, i'd probably end up yelling at the caller, who might be a diabetic needing insulin or medication or someone with clinical depression who needs her antidepressants.

What brings me peace isn't a certain person or one thing, but a collection of things. It's the arts. Being able to see, hear, watch, and taste other perceptions of perfection give me more than just hope. It give me inspiration to shrug off the bad days and move on. It feels me with a inner peace when I find that one song or that one piece of art that completely says what I feel in my heart. It's beautiful.

No matter what happens during my day, with whatever is going on in the world. I get my peace from knowing that when I go home and I'm tired or cranky or joyous, my daughter is there for me. When I'm joyous, she shares it with me. When I'm cranky, she creates joy within me. Hearing about her day, cuddling up for a movie, or tickle fights on the couch. My peace comes from the absolute trust and unconditional love I see in her face whenever she looks at me.

That is my peace.

I find peace in...
Staring at the ocean because it's so beautiful and calm, and it makes me fell small and unsignificant and like even if I make a mistake then it doesn't matter and it'll just be washed away like anything the water touches.

And sunsets and rises, because they're amazing and they're the start and the beginning and they make me feel like romance isn't unreacheable.

And the moon, because it's so clear and white, and when it's dark at night and I look at it it sometimes feels like it's only shining for me.

And my friends, which I love and adore and cherish, because they are the ones that I could never live without and the ones that have made me truly able to be myself and safe with that because I'll know that they're there anyways.

And taking long walks in the forest in summer because it's calm and all you can hear are leaves rustling and birds chirping and the sound of your own footsteps.

And a good book, because what's better than escaping into another world once in a while.

And =Amertie's poetry, because no matter how sad it always makes me smile because the words are perfect and the way it sounds is beautiful.

And music to fit my mood, I really couldn't live without it. Anything from Metall to Rock to Pop to Indie, it's soothing to hear a melody to fit your mindset.

And art and writing (both making/writing and watching/reading) because it's so freeing.

And all the little things like kind words or an extra bright star, just the small things that make life what it is (even if that might sound cliché;).

And lastly, knowing that tomorrow you can wake up to a new day and a new start.

Yeah, those are probably most the things that make me feel at peace.

I find peace in empathizing with others, and I try my hardest to do it with every person, no matter who they are.
I try to understand everybody, and look for the good qualities inherent in each. Where some people see flaws, I see features that make that person unique.
I believe every person has a purpose in the eyes of the collective human soul, and we are all its agents, to explore the world through as many different viewpoints as possible, so that our souls can evolve.
Though I sometimes get frustrated with ignorance and immaturity, I don't hate anyone for who they are and what they do. I just wish every person the best life can offer, especially if theirs, so far, has been troubling.
I share the pain of others, and the sorrow, and I would like to do my best to help everyone understand his and her selves and their problems better. Some times I wish I could just carry the world's problems on my shoulders.
Every person I interact with is a learning experience, teaching me more about who I am; and I like nothing more than to return the favor, and help them learn who they are.

My other peace comes from my Dearest. Just knowing she is there, knowing she is unharmed and safe, talking to her about anything and everything, and empathizing with her on a deep personal level--learning from her and teaching in return. I find solace in the fact that I have her to love, and she returns it. I find peace in the fact that she understands me, and I her, enough so that, when our debates sometimes turn into arguments, we can neither blame each other, nor apologize.
And what would truly bring me peace of mind right now, would be to see her again; Five months seems hardly a short time, when I am reminded every day how terribly much I miss her.

Awesome article and fuckawesome featured pieces. I checked out at least 40% of them (:

For me, I have a few things that calm me down. Just talking or being with the people I really care about, especially one guy in particular. Love can definitely make every worry go away, in my opinion :)

Losing myself in art and poetry is another fantastic way of relaxing. I do it every day, especially just before I go to sleep. And even then, I put some pretty music on, Luke Pickett [because he's got beautiful music check him out.] and I can sleep like I've been given immense amounts of tranqs ;p

If all else fails, role playing on the net and chatting in dAmn :)

Horse riding in the forest and just flat out galloping across the hills. All there is, is the beautiful countryside around me, the pounding of the horses' hooves, the presence of my friends close by and a feeling of peace.

Also, I haven't found anything to beat watching the sun rise over the top of the pine trees that one morning. We just stopped the horses at the crest of a hill after cantering up a side track, and saw the sun just appearing over the trees, bathing the scene in gold. I'll always remember that morning and how peaceful it was.

Aw ~ some of those pictures are so pretty <3

Lets see ~ the thing that gives me peace is...

knowing, that no matter how horrible a day it may have been for me, no matter how lonely I felt at school, or how annoyed I got at something or how much stress raised voices with my parents puts me under, I can always go back up to my room, turn on my computer and my best friend will always be there to talk and say anything in the world and it will always 100% of the time make me smile. It doesn't even matter we hardly ever see each other in person anymore, we still have ways to talk and enjoy the company. Things like listening to music and drawing odd little bits of artwork for my own personal amusement will forever come very much second to my conversations with her <3

I am thus, thoroughly content with everything else in the world 99% of the time because it's something I can always look forward to.

I do hope everyone else has something they can deem as a personal peace as well ^ - ^

This is a brilliant article, I love it :)

This last year my life was absolute hell for the most part, so I often found myself seeking the comfort of peace and solitude. I think the thing I remember giving me the most peace was during the period my little brother had his operation; in November. It was during the early hours of the morning that I found myself walking around the hospital, amoungst all the pain and relief. I found it strangely calming, and the solitude gave me an excuse to do some serious thinking.

In all, I think when times get hard for me, I seek solitude so I can think. Other than that I crave the friendship and company of others, especially a caring group such as LitLove.

I do, now, have a question for you Flutterings.

What calms you ?

Beautiful, thoughtful article as always,

Despite all the pain and trouble people can cause, in those moments of finding quiet strength, or making the stress stop for a minute, it's actually people, and their goodness and thought and consideration and overwhelming love that makes me smile, and remember to keep breathing. Friends who know you the best, or a random strangers comment can be equally powerful in the essential calming effect... or maybe just humankind at their best...

Also always music - the calming rhythm or furious beat, whichever is neccessary to gently come back down..

Ultimately - Love, Laughter, and some kick-ass tunes!

that's the most peaceful time for me.

when you're surrounded by walls and the living, wriggling warmth of someone (usually complaining and slightly irritable) who doesn't care if you just sit and don't talk, just drinking in the feeling of being warm and loved.

-sighs happily-

i hope you continue to find your peace.

The things that gives me peace after a long day are a hug from my hyperactive eight-year old brother, deep breaths, looking up at the sky, and - this thought gets me every time - the knowledge that even though today wasn't as great and fulfilling as I'd like it to be, it will get better. I can make it better, if I just believe it will be better and do something to make it that way. That thought alone can give me inner peace and make me smile.

Bubble baths make me feel better, as well as chocolate. I would also read a book or draw to get stuff off my mind.
And sometimes when i am feeling lazy, I would lounge on the couch with my doggie looking out the window . C:
